C.B.D. stands for Cannabidiol and T.H.C. stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol and are both compound extracts from the hemp (or marijuana) plant. In a nutshell, CBD is the legal and beneficial substance of pot, while THC is the part that gets you “high”, through its psychoactive properties. For centuries now throughout the world, people have relied primarily on chemical drugs for pain relief, despite potential risk of side effects. Fast forward to 2019, passed all the trials and errors of medicine to today’s era, where we can finally rely on what is being deemed, a “miracle” cure in CBD and it is available over the counter and now even in beauty salons!

What does CBD do exactly in terms of health benefits and how do you take it?

Firstly, it is important to understand that CBD and THC are two entirely different chemical compounds. THC will give you the “high” feeling while CBD helps not only alleviate pain relief, it also combats anxiety, treats sleep issues, reduces the risk of diabetes, and has anti-seizure properties. For those suffering from these symptoms, this is historic, as there has never really been a viable solution for such a myriad of relief. CBD is a fantastic alternative to traditional medication such as aspirin and harsher prescriptions, in this sense.

If CBD is so great, why has it not been available to the public until now?

The long answer to this question would probably require a whole other article just on that topic alone. The short answer is, as the times evolve, so do we. The more research and studies that are done, the more accurately we learn of any topic. Time, trial and error are needed. Now that we have this, we are braving a new path in which what was once deemed “immoral” is now saving lives. CBD is legal in over 30 states in the U.S., while marijuana as a whole plant and its derivative, THC is not fully legal yet all throughout. As we become more and more cultured to CBD’s benefits, it has rapidly risen to be sold throughout the world and people are sipping it all up! From corner store delis, to pharmacies and now even hair boutiques, CBD can be found just about anywhere.

Buyer beware, for there are CBD counterfeits out there!

Since CBD is fairly new on the market as a product, it is not yet F.D.A. regulated. What that means is you should do some research as a consumer before buying CBD products from just any old place that promises to deliver the same quality, potency and authenticity of the CBD oil. In 2017,  a study revealed that 7 out of 10 CBD brands in fact, did not contain any CBD or very little in its product as it is advertised. In addition, 15% of those sales were uncovered to be containing unknown compounds instead, which can harm the individual who is not expecting it. Integrity in CBD products is essential as anyone can say their bottle contains CBD and slap a label on them for a quick buck. It is thereby so important to build a trust with a brand you know will guarantee you the goods!

How can you know for sure if you’re purchasing a high quality CBD product?

Much like any important purchase, I would do a little research before choosing the right brand for me. In order to be promised a high quality and potency of CBD, I would refer to the reputation, authenticity and integrity of the business offering them as well as the feedback of their loyal patrons. In other words, would you buy an Apple product from Downtown, Chinatown from a shady table vendor? Or would you go directly to Apple where they have a history of providing excellent customer service? It’s a no-brainer. I would suggest perhaps skipping out on the corner bodegas and street vendors. They do not have to go through regulations as a standard company would, so health food stores and beauty salons are in my opinion (aside from the doctor herself), the best option to get great CBD quality at an affordable rate!
